This week we look at the testimony of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing: Yahoo! Inc.’s Provision of False Information to Congress. Testifying were: Jerry Yang - CEO of Yahoo and Michael Callahan - Yahoo General Counsel To get you up to date, here are some excerpts from the opening statement from Tom Lantos - Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs:
Shi Tao, who is languishing in a Chinese dungeon on a 10-year sentence because he pierced the veil, and a huge, U.S.-based multinational company practically led the police to his door. On the eve of the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre three years ago, the Chinese government issued a directive forbidding journalists from covering anything related to this anniversary. In a brief second that would have a momentous impact on the rest of his life, Shi Tao hit the “forward” button on his Yahoo! email account, and sent the government’s message to a NGO overseas advocating for democratic change in China.
You can read the entire statement here. In short, through watching the testimony, it is blatantly clear Yahoo has no concern for this situation other than to make it go away. Well, here's to not making it go away. This week we are going to be celebrating "Boycott Yahoo Week" by looking at all the other services you can use besides Yahoo services. Enjoy!
